Professional Standards Committee Highlight: IMMEDIATE ACTIION NEEDED TO PROTECT LOCAL CONTROL
ACTION NEEDED:
Earlier this year, the California Business Roundtable placed the Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act on the November 2024 ballot. The initiative would undermine local control over resources needed to provide essential services. In response to this ballot measure, the League of California Cities worked with Assembly Member Ward to introduce Assembly Constitutional Amendment No. 13 (ACA 13), which proposes to increase the vote approval requirement for future statewide initiative measures that appear on the ballot on or after January 1, 2024. ACA 13 would require any statewide initiative that enhances a voter requirement to pass by that same voter requirement.
ACA 13 is scheduled to be heard in the Senate Appropriations Committee on September 12th. If it passes the Committee, it will go to the Senate for a vote as soon as September 13th. In order to protect local control, it is recommended that each agency contact their State Senator and ask them to vote in favor of ACA 13.
