Margaret Moggia, Executive Manager of Finance, West Basin Municipal Water District & CSMFO Past President

As I sit in my home office, I click on another link to connect me to the virtual world. Sure, I’m on screen (again), but this time it is different. Cue the music and the graphics, the virtual conference has begun. I have been fortunate to attend GFOA’s annual conference in May and some industry conferences over the summer and while the formats are slightly different, how wonderful it is to still be able to connect and learn.

For the moment, the virtual conference is the new reality to attend conferences. Of course, the virtual conferences don’t replace the in-person conference, but I feel fortunate that professional organizations have found a way to pivot. Members are still able make connections with colleagues and while also keeping current on best practices and technical knowledge.

As those opportunities to attend a virtual conference arise, sign up to attend – and here are a few tips to enhance your experience.

  1. Set aside time. Mark your calendar as out of the office. Yes, attending from your computer is convenient but think about it as if you were able to attend a conference and be present. After all, if you were physically there, this is where your attention would be.
  2. Take time to explore. Virtual platforms still offer the opportunity to connect and grab resources. And sometime there is even a little fun with it. Download the presentation or visit the virtual exhibit hall and see what the vendors have to offer. In some ways, it’s like secret shopping. Thank the vendors that have graciously sponsored as they are our partners to collaborate, innovate, and achieve. So, pick up an electronic pamphlet or watch a video to learn more.
  3. Go back for more. See a session you like, but already planning to attend another one or perhaps you missed a key point of a presentation. No worries, most often virtual platforms give you the opportunity to go back and watch it again.
  4. Share the experience. With the cost of the virtual conference usually reduced and no added travel costs, consider inviting one of your colleagues to share in the experience.

As a reminder CSMFO’s 2021 Annual Conference is going virtual and yes, it will be exciting, interactive, peppered with fun surprises and an amazing line up of sessions. See you in the virtual world – I’m off to find my avatar.
