Meet CSMFO’s 2020 Communications Committee Chair!
I am Karla Romero, Finance Director for the City of La Quinta and CSMFO’s 2020 Communications Committee Chair. I am honored and humble to take on this new leadership role for an organization that has helped me shape my government career. Government finance is a relatively small, yet mighty, group of talented individuals with specialized skills, who sometimes move among agencies to gain new experiences and evolve in a career path.
The Communications Committee looks forward to continuing to serve your needs by providing educational articles, highlighting hot topics, sharing innovative ideas, celebrating career milestones, and pushing boundaries so that all our communities may prosper. New in 2020, “Coach Ella”, an advice column were members can ask questions and have a subject matter expert provide support and direction on a challenging topic.
The Disney magic was fully present at the CSMFO 2020 conference. Hotel guests were impressed by cordial nature of conference attendees paired with their energy and enthusiasm of being a part of CSMFO. A hotel guest comment to me, “You all must love what you do. How big is your company?” To which I replied, “Yes, we do love what we do and one another. We serve all present and future residents, visitors, business owners of California.” She looked confused and amused, so I went on the explain our roles in government finance and she left with a pep in her CA step.
This month CSMFO News will take you back to the 2020 conference magic. We want to thank the nearly 2,000 attendees for your dedication to government finance, your organizations, and CSMFO. Enjoy the numerous pictures, conference session and event highlights, get to know award recipients, and in the process with budget session upon us, don’t forget to plan for ahead for the CSMFO 2021 conference being held in San Jose, CA.

Karla Romero, City of La Quinta Finance Director/City Treasurer since 2016 and is honored to serve CSMFO’s Communications Committee Chair. Karla was also CSMFO’s 2017 Volunteer of the Year, Coachella Valley’s Chapter Chair from 2016 to 2019, Communications Committee member since 2017, and is a proud CSMFO member since 2007.
She has earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Business Administration and has over 20 years of progressive private and public finance experience. The favorite part of her job is seeing others succeed, thus her passion for mentoring, sharing knowledge, and empowering others.
On her free time, she enjoys “trying” to garden (getting better), reliving her childhood with a very active son (Titus), and staying connected with family and friends.
