CSMFO Communication Committee

CSMFO News

Welcome once again to our June 2019 CSMFO News online edition, with a special focus this month on a Finance Department’s role in ballot measures. Our “soft” launch last month was incredibly successful in both the operation of the new back-end of the website as well as how many of you flocked to our site to see the best of prior editions and some new content. We had over 1,000 visits in the first 9 days and finished with 4,900 page views.

Expand Our Galaxy’s Edge

Our Committee is proud this month to expand our galaxy’s edge with new content and features. For the next three weeks, we’ll be providing a special focus on the 2020 ballot measure opportunities from our fiscal lens. As we face steeper increases in repayments to CalPERS for their investment losses and investment shortfalls, and erosion of our tax basis, many of us will have to make tough choices from service reductions to tax increases. And, with our earlier California primary, many agencies may consider being active on both the March 3, 2020 Presidential Primary and November 3, 2020 Presidential Election.

We’ll also be providing the “must know” information you need on the Governors and California legislature’s proposals. And, on each of the next 3 Friday’s, we’ll provide the latest about CSMFO, our Host Committee’s work on the 2020 Anaheim Conference, and our special member and promotion & retirements features.

So help us share the rich resources of our CSMFO News around your agency, and to your peer networks from where you are all the way to Batuu.

Past Lightspeed

Finally, we want to acknowledge the incredible work behind the scenes of our SMA team, with special appreciation to David Garrison, Dayna Dixon, and Amanda Smith, and the support of the entire Communication Committee. Going live on May 1st presented many logistical challenges that were all so expertly and joyfully overcome. It is with great appreciation that we say thank you.

And once again, on behalf of our Board of Directors, all our volunteer leaders, and all of you who came to this happy place; welcome.

Post-Script

On a personal note, our Committee Chair Marcus Pimentel put out a challenge bet to meeting our May 1st go live date, inspired by Sharks hockey legend Jumbo Joe Thornton’s hockey beard. A month later, the gray is emerging and his Wife Laurie and two daughters are repeatedly begging him to shave.

Those who volunteer to support the CSMFO vision and mission—on a committee or at the chapter level—will tell you the value they receive from their active involvement with CSMFO is immeasurable. We invite you to consider volunteering for one of the many opportunities available within CSMFO. Fill out a Volunteer Interest Form online at www.csmfo.org, under “Membership” then “Get Involved.”
